It’s been said that Goodnight
Gunfight sounds like three ghosts having an argument. Jesse, Joanna,
and Winona create memorable minor-key songs out of sparse beats, reverb-soaked
spaghetti-western guitar licks, delicate chords and thumping bass lines.
Their distinct, powerful voices blend to form something casually sweet
but ultimately haunting.
The band formed in September of 2003 after the girls, who met at Bard College,
moved to Brooklyn, New York. It was there that they bonded over going to shows
and Jesse’s vegan home-cooking while listening to music such as The Pixies
and The Raincoats. Winona had been playing the guitar since high school and
had recently started taking violin lessons from her mother, a professional
violinist. Joanna had sung in a band in college, but neither she nor Jesse
owned their respective instruments when they started Goodnight Gunfight. They
learned how to play while also discovering what it meant to collaboratively
write songs.
Each girl brings a different musical perspective to the band. Jesse grew up
going to Long Island Hardcore shows and listening to Riot Grrrl music in the ‘90s,
which is apparent by her speak-sing melodies. Winona’s musical inclinations
range from classical to ‘60s girl groups and ‘80s metal, creating
a unique and mesmerizing sound; while Joanna’s asymmetrical bass lines
are reminiscent of New Wave and Goth Music.
The girls practiced in Jesse’s Greenpoint apartment for nine months before
making their debut at Action Jackson, a DIY venue in Long Island City, Queens,
where they later recorded with Andrew Geller (The Isles, Holy Hail). In May
of 2005 Goodnight Gunfight self-released a four-song EP and plan to tour the
east coast later this year.
